Renowned former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has opened up about the unforgettable experience of officiating a match involving Lionel Messi, highlighting just how extraordinary it was to witness the Argentine maestro up close.
Clattenburg recalled his first encounter with Messi during a Barcelona vs Paris Saint-Germain clash, describing the moment as surreal.

🗣️ “When I was the referee of a match involving Lionel Messi for the first time, I was truly shocked. From my position close to the pitch, I remember thinking: Oh my God, this is unbelievable,” Clattenburg said.
The former referee explained that Messi’s unique style of play even forced him to adapt his officiating approach.
🗣️ “Usually, as a referee, you follow the ball, but with Messi, you might lose it due to his incredible skill. Imagine what it was like for the defenders! I had to change my way of analyzing the situation when the ball was at his feet. He was so skilled that opponents tried to stop him in different ways — sometimes by fouling his foot, and sometimes by using their upper bodies.”
Clattenburg’s words add to the long list of tributes Messi continues to receive from former players, coaches, and referees who witnessed his brilliance in European football.
